The Spirit of Golf

"Golf is deceptively simple, and endlessly complicated. A child can play it well, and a grown man can never master it. Any single round of it is full of unexpected triumphs and seemingly perfect shots that end in disaster.

It is almost a science, yet it is a puzzle without an answer. It is gratifying and tantalizing, precise and unpredictable. It requires complete concentration and total relaxation.

It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

Take a cart if you wish, but Prince William Golf Course offers a great course to play and to walk. There are some ups and downs along the way, but the knolls are gentle and the lies are rarely tricky. Approximately 85 percent of the fairways could be called wide open and generous.

Even from the back tees, this course is fair and playable, and better players can score well by playing from there. But plenty of holes can provide excitement and adventure for players with more skills. And the course is certainly challenging for golfers with beginner to intermediate skills.

Old Hickory consists of gently rolling terrain covered with pine, oak, maple, and hickory. It's bisected by Beaver Creek with about nine holes to the north and nine to the south of the creek. Many other creeks, tributaries of Beaver Creek, trickle through the property, and they are incorporated into the design of the holes. Where housing sites are located, they lie toward the high side of the fairways to make it more comfortable for golfers.

The fairways are very wide and open, but also mounded on the sides so balls will bounce back toward the middle. But you can also use those mounds to get a forward bounce if you're a skillful player. Every hole is bunkered on the course, but the course is not overly bunkered. The course is known for its fast greens. The grass on the greens is A4 bent grass, known for creating fast greens.

Old Hickory Golf Club was designed to fit its site with great precision. The par-72, 7,190-yard championship layout is the work of architect Tim Freeland of Jacksonville, Fla., who previously worked for the design firm of golf legend Gary Player and also worked on the design of Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, sister course to Old Hickory. Old Hickory Golf Club is a challenging course with lots of creeks to cross and sights to see, but it’s also a course that all levels of golfers will enjoy playing. The beautiful scenery and layout is sure to impress your guests and also provide them with many memorable moments.

This scenic course, originally built in 1982, is located on the Mason Neck Peninsula in Lorton. Pohick Bay’s 18 holes run 6400 yards from the back tees, and feature bent grass from tee to green with a mix of poa annua. Add to that a 132 slope rating, rolling terrain throughout and several significant water hazards, and it quickly becomes clear that course management is the name of the game.

The course’s signature holes are a great example. On hole 2, a par 3 that measures 168 yards from the back (157 from the whites), golfers are challenged to lift their shots high up and over a deep ravine that stretches from the tee box to just short of the green. On hole 18, players will find a par 5 that measures over 500 yards from the tips, in which a good tee shot puts you in position to navigate the slight dog leg left, down to the green.

The Bull Run Country Club's 18-hole championship golf course, which opened in 1998, is set on a huge piece of open land in the foothills of Virginia's Bull Run Mountain. It is a quick drive from Washington, D.C., a few miles north of Haymarket, and a few miles south of Middleburg.

The course was designed by Rick Jacobson, a Chicago-area architect who worked for the Jack Nicklaus design company before starting his own firm. His aim at Bull Run was to preserve the look of the land and create a player-friendly course that also has loads of challenges for the more daring hitters. You will find wide fairways done in a concave/convex shape that steer the ball toward the center. There are large landing areas, sometimes defined by grass hollows, bunkers, or trees.

In the heart of Virginia’s horse country, just minutes away from historic Civil War sites, you'll find Bull Run Golf Club, one of the Washington, D.C., area's most outstanding golf courses. We have lots of awards to our credit: Golf Magazine named Bull Run Golf Club as the best new public course in 1999; the Washington Times called us the "best public course in the D.C. area" in 2000; and Washington Golf Monthly named us to the mid-Atlantic's "100 Must-Play Courses." Here's why golfers love Bull Run Golf Club. Ours is a very scenic course that meanders through acres and acres of undeveloped scenic meadows, ponds and woodlands.
